It should be a simple question, “How often should I vacuum my carpet?”
The straightforward answer for vacuuming frequency is: It depends. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI, those who make carpet) recommends vacuuming daily in high-traffic or pet areas, twice weekly in medium-traffic areas, and weekly in light-traffic areas. So, it depends on how quickly the carpet gets soiled. End of story? Almost, but not quite because the implied question is:
“Why is it important to vacuum my carpet frequently?”
“Why” questions do tend to get right to the heart of an issue. Of course carpet longevity is much greater when the abrasiveness of dry soils are removed promptly or mostly removed before entering the house by taking off shoes or using entry rugs. However, beyond the image of clean, are sanitary and healthy.
Next question: “When a person or pet sneezes, where does all that go?”
Have you ever watched the “floaties” in a shaft of light as it cuts through a darkened room? By turning on the light the dust becomes invisible, but it is ever present in the air we breathe. Of course gravity works on these particles and they settle to the floor. On a hard floor, each time someone opens a door, walks through the room, the furnace kicks on, or especially if someone sweeps the floor, much of the dust becomes airborne again.
In this scenario, a carpeted floor acts as a temporary filter to hold much of the dust until – you guessed it – the vacuum picks it up. Air quality, another reason for frequent vacuuming. A good vacuum is important and, yes, the furnace filter helps too. A lifetime electrostatic furnace filter, flushed clean monthly, is ideal. Cleaning and sanitizing the carpet are an essential part of the dust, soil, pollen, pet and insect dander exit strategy. The CRI recommends professional deep cleaning of residential carpet every 12 to 18 months, or more often, depending on how quickly it gets soiled, especially if asthma or allergies are an issue.
